How I Saved a Little and Lost a Bundle
[print]

I grew up during the depression. That has colored a number of attitudes that I have and things that I do. I am not obsessed over it, but I do shut off lights all over the place day and night. “Maybe,” I say to myself. “Maybe it will extend the length of life of the bulb or save a few cents for the electricity. I suggest this attitude greatly influenced my not turning on lights and suffering the consequences.

It was June 3rd 2002, around 9 o’clock in the evening. I was on my way to my office when I remembered the email that announced that shrimp was available in the pantry on a first come, first serve basis. I headed for the pantry, but did not turn on the lights to walk down the office corridor. I knew my way. Had done something similar countless times before. I felt a twinge of guilt that I should be helping myself before the real staff had a chance to sample the goodies. I had pretty much resolved that if there were only a few I would pass them up.

What I found was a huge ice-laden bowl of luscious looking jumbo shrimp. I helped myself to five of them an a little paper plate with a generous glob of the special sauce that so enhances the taste of shrimp. I planned to go from there to my office where I could enjoy the minor feast at leisure. I never made it.

I had taken only a few steps into the dimly lit office area when I hit an obstacle. Actually it was a chair. I walked into it and literally went flying over it. The next thing I knew I was stunned on the floor still holding an empty paper plate in my right hand. I could not move my left arm. I knew immediately that I had done something foolish and that I was not out but injured.

Whoosey, I managed to get to a desk and chair from which I could call for help.

Fr. Anselm, a trained nurse, was summoned. In the meantime I found the lights and crawled around on the floor with my left arm dangling retrieving the scattered shrimp. I ate them without benefit of sauce or much joy, but at least I did not let them get away. This was the beginning of an ordeal.

I had crushed the bone-ball at the upper end of the humerus that fits into the socket of my shoulder. I was not put in a cast nor did they do any surgical procedure on me. My arm was put in a sling and I waited for the healing to take place. There is a lot packed into that “waited.” There was much internal bleeding and my arm went from blue to black and stayed that way for several weeks. I could not take care of myself, but I also did not want to burden the brethren. I didn’t change my clothes for a week at a time when one of the infirmarians would give me a shower and dress me. I did not lie in my bed for a month. I sat in my chair through the night.

I began physical therapy within a few days of the accident and kept it up for over six months. I now have about 90% use of that arm. I will go to my grave with reminders of that evening when I lusted after a few shrimp and changed my life forever.
